Effective Basketball Coaching
The challenges of coaching basketball are many and come in all shapes and sizes. For newcomers to this filed especially, the sheer number of things to be learned and challenges to overcome can be quite scary. It may be scary, but it's very possible, and anyone can do it with enough practice can do it. You will have to begin by learning the drill your team has to do, and then you can move on to learning the basketball plays, which are for many coaches the most fun part of the game.
Basketball plays are relatively easy, though the complexity of the play will depend on the type of team you are coaching. If this is a high school play you can probably get as complicated as you want, though it would be a good idea to keep it simple if you are coaching younger players.
When it comes to the basketball playbook there are a few very basic positions that have been around since the 80's. First of all you would have the point guard - the fastest player on the team if possible. This individual controls the ball and ensures it ends up in the hands of the right player. The shooting guard serves to guard the opponents best perimeter player while the small forward specializes in dribble penetration and steals. The power forward is an offensive player that directly opposes the opposite power forward, and the center serves to protect the basket.
These positions need to be fully and clearly assigned before you make any plays. By moving around the player in these positions you make the play, and if you follow set plays then you move them according to what the play says. Look up the rules and situations for using these plays online or in books when you need help.
The internet is packed full of good basketball coaching information, and you should certainly take advantage of it. With all that information you can certainly learn all you need to over time and with much more ease than if you had tried to do it alone. Remember that while you can learn an awful lot on the internet and in books, and all of this will be invaluable to your coaching career, also invaluable will be your own experience and intuition into the game. This will be developed over time, and can't be found in a book or a search engine.
In any case, it won't be long before you're coaching with confidence, ready to take on virtually any challenge that might present itself. You never know what might come up when dealing with a basketball team, and it is virtually unpredictable. That being the case, keep your eyes open, keep your ears open, and be ready to deal with everything as it comes along. The success or failure of your team depends entirely on you!
