Everything You Need To Understand When Getting Passports For Your Kids

There is no better way to show your children the world than by traveling. In order to go on these international trips, your child will need a passport. Some questions concerning babies passport are frequent, and armed with some answers, you can be comfortable and confident when traveling abroad with your children.

Everyone who travels needs a passport, from the smallest infant to the most elderly gentleman. Also, passports are valid for children under sixteen for only five years, while those above age sixteen can keep those for ten years. If a passport is damaged, it will need to be replaced. Additional passport pages can be inserted without having to purchase a completely new passport.

In February of 2008, the rules regarding children's passports were tweaked a little. Since this law came into effect, both legal guardians or parents of the minor have to give consent in order to apply for a passport. When applying for a child between 16 and 18, this consent is not technically required, but it may be requested in special cases. If the child is under the age of 18, he or she will need to be present in person in front of the acceptance agent, or the AA. Both parents will also need to present valid forms of ID.

If you are planning to apply for a passport for your minor, you will need to bring proof of your US citizenship. In order to do this, you can use an undamaged passport that's been previously issued, a certificate of citizenship, a certified birth certificate, a naturalization certificate, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth. After this, you will have to prove your relationship to the child. This can be done with a birth certificate that has both parents' names, an adoption decree, or a court order showing guardianship or custody. If this birth certificate is from another country, it can still be used. However, you will need to find another form of identification. Next, the parents or guardians will then have to prove their identity. A valid driver's license, a previously issued passport, government or military IDs, or naturalization certificates can be used to do this. Photocopies then will be made, and with the consent of both parents, passport payment, and turning in passport photos, the process is complete.

Sometimes, babies are born overseas. If you and your spouse are United States citizens and your child is born outside of the United States, you will need to contact the native United States embassy or consulate in order to report the birth. A document granting valid American citizenship, the Consular Report of Birth of a Citizen of the United States of America, will be issued.

Convenient internet services has made applying for new passports and replacing old passports easier than ever before, and with this increased convenience, the world ultimately becomes a more accessible place. Tons of doors open themselves for you and your family to explore. Knowing just how to go about getting a passport for minors can save you a lot of hassle when trying to prepare for your trip. Learning about the cultures of the world and seeing famous sites first-hand is the type of experience that can't be replicated, and with your American passports, it's all possible.
