Exactly What To Get When Trying To Get A Passport
The amount of documentation that is required to obtain a passport can be overwhelming for a first time applicant. The first time a passport is applied for, the applicant must apply in person at an approved application facility. Even though it looks like a lot of items are needed when Applying for a passport, there are only six basic items required.
Filling out the application ahead of time can save time and frustrations, especially when using expedited United States passport services. If filling out the application beforehand, do not sign it. It is required that the application is signed in front of an authorized agent. The form is called DS-11 and can be either picked up from an approved facility or printed online.
Next an applicant will need proof of United States citizenship. A certified birth certificate is the most frequently used document but certifications of citizenship, naturalization certificate or an old passport are all accepted. Secondary documents can be used in a case where there are no primary documents available but this is the case for very few citizens. Social Security cards are not considered proof of citizenship.
For minors under the age of 16, proof of guardianship is also needed. A certified birth certificate or adoption decree can be used. A court order of custody or guardianship may are also accepted. Both parents must approve a minor applying for a passport. The only exception is if one parent has legal proof of sole custody of the child.
When submitting the application, the applicant will be asked for photo identification. A state issued ID card such as a driver's license will be accepted. Military ID card's may also be used. If the ID is state issued from a different state the applicant is applying in, a second form of identification will be needed. The second form needs to have as much information that that driver's license has on it. A parent providing consent for a minor will also need to provide their photo identification. Photocopies of all identification are needed to send to the processing center. Most facility center will be able to make photocopies on-site.
The requirements for a passport photo are strict. The safest way to guarantee a photo meets these requirements is to have it taken on-site. The requirements say that the photo has to be taken in the last six months showing a full view of the face against a white background.
United States Passport costs include an application fee and execution fee. There is no execution fee for renewing. Fee's for minors under the age of sixteen are less than those for adults. A book for an adult currently cost $135. The cost for a book and a card is $165.
To be prepared when going to apply, bring all required documents and fees. Having all documentation, such as your proof of citizenship and identification with you and a filled out application, can save time and reduce the stress of Applying for a U.S. passport. Some special conditions can apply for certain situations; a local application center can answer all questions, especially if trying to use expedited U.S. passport services.
