Important Documents To Bring With You For A Infant Passport Application

The old days are gone when you brought your child on a plane and they took your word that it was your child. Now with security levels being raised it is necessary for all passengers to have a passport. Even with an infant you will need passport identification for their ability to board a plane. You also need to know what to bring with you for a child passport application.

Getting a passport is a good idea for your child anyway. They are good for five years and there are many circumstances where your child may need photo identification that is legally recognized. You can change the photo every six months as they grow to keep the picture current.

You will need your child's birth certificate as proof of U. S. Citizenship. You will need the actual certificate that has the state seal. The card that is issued will not be accepted. If your child was not born in the United States but is now a citizen, you will need proof of this or anything legal that proves they are a citizen of the United States. Be aware they take the birth certificate with the application and then return it to you.

You the parent will need proof of your relationship with your child. This could be the birth certificate or adoption papers that have a court seal. Both parents do not need to be present at the application process if there is a notarized signature by the absent parent for the application. You can get these forms online and print one out. If you are the only parent you need to prove that as well with a legal document such as divorce papers showing custody or a death certificate.

You will also need your child's social security number for the DS-11 application that is submitted to the federal government. It is best to bring your child's social security card with you just in case. They will not collect this piece of material.

You have to prove your identification as well. You can use your passport or driver's license. You can also use a military ID if you have one. There are also other documents you can use. Just check with their website before you go if you have other types of identification.

You will need a photo of your child for the passport that is turned in with the application. You can get this done at some sites with the application for an extra fee or bring it with you. Get a pro to do it, as there are specs you have to follow. You will need two copies.

Be prepared for the costs of a passport as well. They are around eighty dollars each to date so plan for this. The exact amount of a child's passport can be calculated on the USPS website or other sites. Have all of your documentation ready, photos and enough of a payment to get a childrens passport. You will receive it in about six weeks so plan ahead and be prepared.
