Seeing Antarctica From The Air
This ninety-one year-old citizen has enjoyed the ability to travel far and wide. She recently visited Antarctica. She saw it with her very own eyes, not in a magazine or on television. During her two previous trips to the area, she?d not seen Antarctica. This time she was actually able to view it. She flew over Antarctica, though she never did land.
As she flew above Antarctica for four hours, she was able to see glaciers, fjords, and mountain peaks. The pilot took the plane down to 300 feet above the ground. Fog covered one of the mountain ranges they passed. They couldn?t have asked for better weather for viewing. The sun was bright in the sky and it was absolutely clear. They traveled in mid march, which marks the end of Antarctica?s summer. The air temperatures were sub-zero. One scientist, a naturalist who researched on the continent was the tour guide and lecturer on board. You'll get further resources on antarctic cruises by visiting there.
The 91 year-old traveler really wanted to see penguins during the flight. She didn?t see any on the flight, but her daughter did. The daughter was sitting at a different window. They took a ship to the Falkland Islands. These are off the coast of Argentina. She took a boat to the East Falkland Islands, where she was able to see hundreds of Magellan penguins on one beach. Magellans are the tallest of all penguins.
The two traveled for 16 hours by air from the US to South America, where the cruise left dock. They were able to see many South American ports, and then were invited to take a dip in the ship?s pool. Without regard to the near-freezing air temperatures, our ninety-one year-old tourist jumped in and earned a certificate for doing so.
When the cruise ship got to Chile, passengers traveled via bus to tour Santiago before they flew to Rio.Perfect weather accompanied the three week cruise. The clearness of the night air allowed all the passengers to see the Southern Cross, the smallest of all constellations. When she?d last seen South America, the lady cruised the major river system and saw a big city. Our traveler was able to return to the jungle area around the river and to see the destruction of the area first hand. She is very worried about the loss of bird habitat. She has even been on Safari in Africa. A past trip to left Antarctica as the only continent she'd not visited. She finally visited them all with her recent trip to Antarctica.
