The Paperwork Necessary To Satisfy Pasport Requirements
When you travel, you have to be prepared with the things you need. Traveling overseas means more than just going from one state to another. If you have never done this before, it is time to learn about US passport requirements.
A Passport Is Critical
Gone are the days of just crossing borders as we travel. We are now required to have a valid passport to enter or leave a foreign country. And for that to happen, we have to meet certain requirements.
DS-11 Form
For your first passport, you have to apply in person at an acceptance facility or a passport agency. This could be a Post Office or library designated to accept applications. The application form, the DS-11, is available online and can be filled out on your computer or by hand.
Passport Offices
One thing you need to keep in mind with your application form is the signature. Do not sign the form until you are at the acceptance facility. Your signature will need to be verified by the person accepting your form.
Required Documents
You will also have to have with you, proof of US citizenship. There are several documents that are acceptable. A certified birth certificate issued by your state of birth, a certificate of naturalization or a consular report of a birth abroad certificate are all acceptable forms of identification.
Alternative Information
If you cannot provide primary evidence documents, it is possible to use secondary documents. You could use early public records along with a Letter of No Record. If your birth certificate was not filed within one year of your birth, you can also apply for a delayed birth certificate.
Passports For Children
If you have an American parent and you were born abroad, you will need other piece of paperwork. A statement detailing your parents’ history in the States and their marriage certificate is required. Proof of the American parents citizenship has to be provided. You will also have to have your birth certificate translated into English.
Photocopy Of Paperwork
You will also be required to make photocopies of the documents that you are providing. Be sure you do your copies on clean white paper. Copy both sides of all of the documents on the front of each sheet only.
Passport Styles
The fees for a passport will vary based on different criteria. The different forms of documentation you apply for include a passport book or card. You can also apply for both pieces at the same time. The fees for a person under sixteen will be less expensive. If you are in the United States when you are applying for your passport, you can also pay extra to have it expedited.
Passport Photos
You will need to have a photo taken or can use one that has been taken within the last six months as long as it meets strict protocols. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure you understand what they require. If you use a photographer, be sure to tell them that it is a passport photo. The photographer will already know of the background colors and size requirements.
The U.S. passport requirements are all available online. As well as the complete list of documents that you will need. When you have your documents, photos and your money ready, you can go to the facility that you have chosen and make your US passport application application. Four to six weeks later, you should receive your passport.
